John Wood has just sent me a letter explaining a change in a grant that will be included in aid to students who go to college. It is called the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG). This grant is awarded to students who also qualify for Pell grants. It is up to $750 for the first year and up to $1300 for the second year but students must have taken 4 units of English, 3 units of Math (Algebra I and up), 3 units of Science (including 1 year from at least two of the following: biology, chemistry, or physics), 3 units of Social Studies, and 2 units of Foreign Language. College Application Dos and Don'ts +Do follow the rules if an application asks you to choose one essay, do not answer them all. Read the application directions completely before answering any questions. +Do include everything Verify all forms have been signed and that you have included all essays and recommendations. Double check that you have not left out anything important. Make copies for your records. +Do pay attention to deadlines Submit your application with plenty of time to spare. You may want to send your application via certified mail or request an email recept if you applied online, for added assurance that it arrived on time. -Don't procrastinate letting things wait until the last minute might mean leaving something out or making mistakes on the application. You want to take as much time as possible on your application. -Don't leave anything out be careful to not treat an online application like an instant message (IM) or e-mail. An admissions office does not want to see smiley faces or IM slang. Treat an online application with the same seriousness as you would a paper one. |
Financial Aid for Students at most Schools information.
Everyone should apply for financial aid, even if you think you will not qualify. To get started the student should go to www.pin.ed.gov to obtain a PIN (personal identification number) for themselves and also a parent should get one. The parent and student cannot use the same one. You use your PIN as your identifier and digital signature when you complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov or I recommend you set up an appointment with John Wood Community College to help you apply for FAFSA. They will do it happily with no problems, and you get your results back quicker than if you file online yourself. You must have your completed tax returns for this year to do the forms and you cannot file until after Jan 1, 2008. You must refile your FAFSA every year. The different catagories a student can qualify for are: 1. Grants (which don't have to be paid back) Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) (1st year maximum $750 & second year maximum $1300 Federal Pell Grant (From $400 - $4310) Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) (From $1,400 - $2,200) Illinois Incentive for Access Grant (IIA) ($500) Monetary Award Program (MAP) Partial Illinois tuition/fees (depending on state appropriations and how long they last) National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) Maximum of $4000 each year of third & fourth years Student-to-Student Grant (up to $1000) These are all figured by a formula used on the FAFSA form by the government. 2. Loans Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized) $3500 for freshman, $4,500 for Sophomores, $5,500 for Juniors/Seniors, interest rate varies, repayment begins six months after student leaves school. Federal Stafford Loan (Unsubsidized) Same as above less amount of subsidized loan, interest rate varies, payment of principle can be deferred, but interest accrues and is due while student is in school. Federal PLUS Loan (Parent and graduate student loan) Up to total coast of education less other financial aid, Interest rate varies, repayment begins 60 days after disbursement. 3. Student Employment Federal Work Study (FWS) Part-time student job usually on campus, some off-campus community service jobs available; awarded based on financial need. Regular Student Employment (RSE) Part-time, on campus student job; not based on financial need. |
